Any Gunslinger (Dark Tower) fan, of Stephen King's, will immediately recognize my Ridgeback's namesake. For those that don't, the story (more of a epic) encompasses 7 books and from what we know is a Western that is set in the post-apocalyptic future of a sister reality to the world we live in. As the story progresses, characters come and go (as well they should) but one in particular was a young boy who was killed in our world and thus born into Roland's (the gunslinger). As fate would have it Roland was forced to make a choice of saving the boy (Jake) in his world or allowing him to fall and being able to catch the man in black (Walter). Somehow Roland's allowing Jake to die a second time negated the first and created a paradox in both of their minds which began to slowly drive each character mad. In the third book Roland, now traveling through the empty world with two new players (Eddie and Susannah), draw Jake back into his world. This "birth" closes the paradox they were both suffering. Shortly after, Jake is woken by the licks of a billy bumbler, sort of a cross between a dog, raccoon, and pig that is able to both speak and reason. Jake tells the bumbler "Good Boy" as he tried to coax him close enough to pet. The bumbler replies "ood oy", not enunciating the first consonants, and there his name was. Oy gradually remembers the spoken language, as they travel, and saves Jake's life on one occasion. Book 7 hit the shelves September 21st, and I have yet to read the ending to the epic tale. I'm curious to see what role Oy will play in the destruction of Mordred. | ||||||||||||
